Super Bowl XLVIII Champion Seattle Seahawks are still experiencing the ongoing perks of being a championship team. The entire organization was honored by President Barak Obama at the White House on May 21st, 2014.
“It’s a big deal to be here at the White House,” said Head Coach Pete Carroll, “it was a very special moment.” The Seahawks filed into the East Room of the White House, where Obama gave an honoring speech to the team, the City of Seattle and of course, the 12th Man. “You can’t talk about the Seahawks without talking about the 12th Man,” said Obama, immediately followed by a roar of the 12’s in the crowd.
The Seahawks incredible season and the road to the Super Bowl was highlighted during his speech, but Obama also spoke to the work off the field that also makes the Seahawks a championship team. He commended Richard Sherman for being a shining example to the youth of his hometown in Compton because of his academic and athletic achievements. Russell Wilson’s weekly dedication to Seattle Children’s Hospital, even during the season was distinctively impressive to the President; as was Pete Carroll’s work with at risk youth and Owner Paul Allen’s charity which has provided millions of dollars for medical research into traumatic brain injuries. That commitment to the community from the Seahawks is a big part of why the Obama believes this team is deeply embraced by their city.
From One Leader to Another
President Obama gave special recognition to Pete Carroll for his outstanding leadership, stating that those in leadership positions are always looking to other leaders who are successful. “I think it’s pretty clear that Coach Carroll does things the right way and we’re very proud of him.” Pete Carroll to the President – “I want you to know that just a phone call away is The Boom.”
