The weekend festivities started with the BET Experience at L.A. Live campus in downtown Los Angeles from Thursday, June 20th to Sunday, June 23rd. Several locations were used such as the Los Angeles Convention Center, Staples Center and much more for live music performances, celebrity basketball game, fashion shows, etc.
Channel A TV was fortunate to cover the 3-On-3 Celebrity Basketball Tournament Saturday, June 22 in West Hall B at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Four celebrity-filled teams — some big names include The Game, Two Chains, Eric Bellinger, Blueface, etc.–competed to win $50,000 for the charity of their choice. The game lasted a couple hours and the environment was filled with excitement and intensity.
The following day — Sunday, June 23rd, the 19th Annual BET Awards, hosted by actress Regina Hall, was in full effect at the Microsoft Theater. Channel A TV held it down on the Blue Carpet pre-show in honor of the late Nipsey Hussle who sadly lost his life on March 31st due to a senseless violence. The late Nipsey Hussle was also recognized by BET for his accomplishments and humanitarian efforts for the Crenshaw District community and awarded this year’s Humanitarian Award to his estates.
The blue carpet was graced by A-list celebrities such as Cardi B, who led with this year’s most nominations (7) including best female hip-hop artist, video of the year, and album of the year. Drake follows with five nominations including best male hip-hop artist, video of the year, and the best collaboration.
The BET Awards is also known for celebrating International music from third world countries. This year, West African Nigerian rapper/singer Burna Boy was awarded the Best International Act 2019 where his mother proudly accepted his award on his behalf.
