In 2026, Channel A TV was proud to once again document the excitement of Seafair Weekend, capturing the sights, sounds, people, and unforgettable moments that make this Seattle tradition so special.

From the thunder of the hydroplanes racing across Lake Washington to the spectacular aerial performances overhead, Seafair 2026 provided an extraordinary backdrop for Channel A TV’s ongoing commitment to covering major sporting, cultural, entertainment, and community events throughout the Pacific Northwest.

A Seattle Tradition Since 1950

Seafair officially began in 1950, when Seattle leaders created a major summer celebration designed to attract visitors, promote the city, and showcase Seattle’s connection to the water. The first festival was held August 11–20, 1950, and included parades, boat races on Green Lake, athletic competitions, community festivals, and the construction of the 5,500-seat Aqua Theater in just 75 days.

The following year, Seafair’s connection to hydroplane racing became even stronger when the Gold Cup hydroplane race was brought to Lake Washington. Seattle’s Stan Sayres had won the Gold Cup in Detroit in 1950, giving him the opportunity to select the location for the following year’s race. He brought the prestigious competition to Seattle in 1951, helping establish hydroplane racing as one of Seafair’s signature traditions.

What began as a summer festival has grown into a multi-week celebration featuring more than 30 community events and reaching more than two million people across the region. Seafair describes itself as a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to creating memorable experiences and connecting people and communities.

The Thunder of the Hydroplanes Returns

The hydroplanes remain at the heart of Seafair Weekend.

In 2026, the Apollo Mechanical Cup Hydroplane Races returned to Lake Washington from July 31 through August 2, featuring testing and qualifying, Grand Prix hydroplanes, vintage hydroplanes, Junior Hydros, and the headline H1 Unlimited competition.

The H1 Unlimited hydroplanes are among the fastest racing boats in the world. Powered by turbine engines producing approximately 3,000 horsepower, these boats can approach speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour and create enormous walls of water known as rooster tails.

For Channel A TV, capturing these machines at full speed offered an opportunity to showcase not only the spectacle of the race but also the engineering, athletic skill, teamwork, and tradition behind one of Seattle’s most recognizable sporting events.

The 2026 air show featured an impressive lineup of military and civilian aircraft, including the U.S. Marine Corps F-35B, U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III, U.S. Army helicopters, the Boeing 737-9 Freedom Plane fly-by, and the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, scheduled to perform on Sunday, August 2.

The combination of boats and aircraft creates the unique spectacle that has become synonymous with Seafair Weekend.
