LOCAL YOUTH EXPERIENCE FIFA WORLD CUP

Kent Black Action Commission, FIFA Seattle, King County Metro and Channel A TV Unite to Create an Unforgettable Experience for Young People

SEATTLE, Washington 2026 — The 2026 FIFA World Cup created a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young people from the Black and African American community to experience the world’s biggest sporting event in person.

Through a collaborative community initiative led by the Kent Black Action Commission (KBAC) in partnership with FIFA, FIFA Seattle, King County Metro, and Channel A TV, 20 local youth and 10 adult chaperones were able to attend the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between the United States and Belgium in Seattle.

For many of the young participants, the experience represented much more than attending a soccer match. It was an opportunity to witness elite international competition, experience the energy of a World Cup stadium, connect with their peers, and see firsthand how sport can bring people and communities together.

Creating Access to a Global Sporting Event

Major sporting events can sometimes feel out of reach for young people and families who face economic or other barriers to participation. The World Cup youth experience was designed to help address those barriers by connecting local youth with an extraordinary global event taking place in their own community.

A total of 30 participants took part in the experience, including 20 youth and 10 adult chaperones and volunteers. The smaller group size allowed organizers and chaperones to provide individual attention, maintain a safe and organized environment, and ensure that participants could fully enjoy the experience.

For many of the youth, this was their first opportunity to attend a FIFA World Cup match.

The excitement of entering the stadium, seeing thousands of fans gathered from around the world, and watching professional players compete at the highest level created memories that will remain with participants for years to come.

Connecting Youth With Soccer and Sport

The experience also had an important impact beyond the match itself.

Following the event, participating youth expressed increased excitement about becoming more involved in soccer and other sports. Seeing professional athletes compete at the international level gave young people an opportunity to connect their own interests and aspirations with what they witnessed on the field.

For organizers, this was one of the most meaningful outcomes of the initiative.

Sports can provide young people with opportunities to develop teamwork, discipline, confidence, leadership, communication, and perseverance. By placing youth directly in the atmosphere of a global sporting event, the program helped demonstrate that sports can be a pathway to personal growth and community connection.

Promoting Public Transportation

Transportation accessibility was also an important component of the initiative.

KBAC promoted King County Metro transportation options through community networks, social media, direct communication with participating families, and other community outreach channels. Providing transportation information helped families understand how public transit could be used to access a major international event safely and conveniently.

The initiative also demonstrated how public transportation can help connect communities to major sporting, cultural, and civic events throughout the region.

Participants described the overall experience as historic and repeatedly characterized the opportunity to attend a World Cup match as a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience.

A Successful Community Partnership

The success of the program was rooted in collaboration.

The partnership among FIFA, FIFA Seattle, King County Metro, KBAC, and Channel A TV brought together organizations with different resources and areas of expertise to create an opportunity that would have been difficult to achieve independently.

KBAC provided community engagement and youth connections. FIFA and FIFA Seattle helped make the World Cup experience accessible to the community. King County Metro supported the transportation component, while Channel A TV documented the experience and helped tell the story of the initiative and its impact.

Strong communication, advance planning, volunteer support, and coordination among partners contributed to a smooth and successful event.

No Major Challenges Reported

Organizers reported no significant challenges during the planning or implementation of the event.

The collaborative approach, clear communication with families and participants, transportation planning, and support from volunteers helped ensure that the youth experience was safe, organized, and enjoyable.

The success of the event demonstrates the value of establishing strong partnerships before major community events and creating clear roles for each participating organization.

Looking Toward the Future

While the initial experience served 30 participants, the level of community interest suggests that similar opportunities could have an even greater impact if expanded.

One of the primary recommendations for future partnerships is to increase participant capacity so that more young people can participate. Expanding ticket allocations and transportation resources would allow community organizations to reach additional youth and families who might otherwise be unable to attend major sporting events.

Future initiatives could also incorporate additional programming around the event, including:

  • Youth soccer clinics and sports activities
  • Leadership and mentorship opportunities
  • Career and education discussions connected to sports
  • Youth media and broadcasting experiences
  • Public transportation education
  • Community engagement and cultural activities

These additional components could transform a single sporting event into a broader youth development and educational experience.

Investing in the Next Generation

The FIFA World Cup youth experience demonstrated what is possible when community organizations, public agencies, sports organizations, and media partners work together toward a common goal.

For the participating youth, the experience was about more than a ticket to a soccer match. It was an opportunity to dream bigger, experience something extraordinary, and see themselves as part of a global community.

The excitement generated by the event also created an opportunity to encourage greater youth participation in sports and inspire the next generation of athletes, leaders, and community advocates.

A Lasting Memory

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be remembered around the world for its historic matches and global celebration of soccer. For the 20 young people who experienced the tournament in Seattle through this initiative, it will also be remembered as the moment they walked into a World Cup stadium and experienced international soccer firsthand.

The experience reinforced a powerful message: when communities come together and barriers are removed, young people can gain access to opportunities that inspire them for a lifetime.

KBAC extends its appreciation to FIFA, FIFA Seattle, King County Metro, Channel A TV, the participating families, volunteers, chaperones, and community partners for helping make this extraordinary experience possible.

“This was more than a match” said Dr. Davies Chirwa who organized the youth and families for this opportunity alongside Mr. Charles Carston and Ms. Gwen Allen Carston.

It was an investment in our youth, an investment in our community, and a memory that will last a lifetime.
