Kent, WA – August 2025 – The spirit of teamwork, mentorship, and community pride was on full display at the 5th Annual Unity in the Community event, held at the Kent YMCA. The celebration brought together families, community leaders, and youth from across the region, highlighted by the participation of Seattle sports legends Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman, and Shawn Kemp.

Drawing an estimated 4,000 attendees, the event was produced by GEM and XTADIUM, in collaboration with more than 20 community partners, and featured a full day of activities centered around youth empowerment, diversity, and wellness.
Legends Giving Back
Former Seahawks stars Richard Sherman and Marshawn Lynch took to the field with local youth, running football reps, offering hands-on coaching, and delivering words of encouragement that inspired both players and families. Their presence was more than a celebrity appearance—it was a reminder of the importance of mentorship and giving back to the next generation.

Seattle SuperSonics icon Shawn Kemp brought his trademark passion to the basketball courts, coaching both boys’ and girls’ teams while sharing lessons of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. His mentorship resonated deeply with the young athletes, many of whom described the experience as unforgettable.
A Celebration of Community Impact
Beyond the star power, Unity in the Community showcased its true mission: providing support and resources to local families. This year’s event distributed over 2,000 backpacks with school supplies, 800 meals to youth, 600 books, 200 pieces of sports equipment, and 150 pairs of Nike shoes and clothing to ensure children are prepared both academically and athletically for the year ahead.

Dr. Kendrick Glover, founder of GEM, emphasized the event’s growing impact:
“Unity in the Community is about more than sports—it’s about inspiring young people, breaking down barriers, and bringing families together. Seeing legends like Richard Sherman, Marshawn Lynch, and Shawn Kemp pour into our youth shows the power of community when we come together.”
About the Legends
- Marshawn Lynch – Known as “Beast Mode,” Lynch is one of the most iconic running backs in NFL history. A Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks, he was celebrated for his powerful running style, leadership, and community advocacy. Off the field, Lynch has invested heavily in youth programs and business ventures that uplift underserved communities.

- Richard Sherman – Widely regarded as one of the best cornerbacks of his era, Sherman played a pivotal role in the Seahawks’ Legion of Boom defense and their historic Super Bowl XLVIII victory. Beyond his on-field accolades, Sherman is known for his philanthropy, particularly in education, through the Blanket Coverage Foundation, which provides resources to low-income students.

- Shawn Kemp – A six-time NBA All-Star, Kemp was the heart of the Seattle SuperSonics during the 1990s and remains one of the city’s most beloved athletes. Known for his electrifying dunks and unmatched athleticism, Kemp led the Sonics to multiple playoff runs, including the 1996 NBA Finals. Today, he continues to inspire through mentorship and community involvement in the Seattle area.
Building a Legacy
Now in its fifth year, Unity in the Community has become a signature event in South King County, reflecting the strength, resilience, and diversity of the region. By blending athletics, mentorship, and resource distribution, the event continues to uplift thousands of families while fostering unity across neighborhoods, cities, and counties.
As the final whistle blew and the basketballs stopped bouncing, one message rang clear: when legends and leaders give back, communities rise together.
