The 5th Annual Unity in the Community brought thousands together at the Kent YMCA for a powerful day of sports, resources, and celebration. Produced by GEM (Glover Empower Mentoring) and XTADIUM, with the support of more than 20 community partners, the event reached new milestones, drawing over 4,000 residents across 69 zip codes, 29 cities, and 5 counties.

A Day of Sports and Inspiration
The event was alive with energy as youth participated in competitive football, rugby, and basketball tournaments, highlighting teamwork, discipline, and leadership. Adding to the excitement were hometown legends Richard Sherman, Marshawn Lynch, and Shawn Kemp, whose presence inspired young athletes and reminded families of the powerful role sports can play in shaping future leaders.
Speaking about the importance of showing up for young people, Richard Sherman shared:
“Events like this remind us why giving back matters. When kids see people who grew up in the same communities standing here with them, it shows them what’s possible. Unity in the Community is not just an event—it’s planting seeds of hope and belief in the next generation.”

Empowering Families and Youth with Resources
Beyond athletics, Unity in the Community remained grounded in its mission to uplift and provide. This year, with the support of sponsors and volunteers, the event distributed:
- 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies
- 800 meals served to youth
- 600 books donated to promote literacy
- 200+ pieces of sporting equipment including footballs, basketballs, and skateboards
- 150+ pairs of Nike shoes and clothing for children and teens
These contributions reflected the event’s commitment to breaking barriers, supporting families, and creating opportunities for youth to thrive.

Commentary from Dr. Kendrick Glover, Founder of GEM
Reflecting on the success of the day, Dr. Kendrick Glover, Founder and Executive Director of GEM, shared:
“Unity in the Community has always been about more than sports or resources, it’s about showing our young people and families that they belong, that they are valued, and that when we stand together, we can achieve incredible things. This year’s event was our biggest yet, and I am deeply grateful to our partners, volunteers, and community leaders who made it possible. Seeing over 4,000 people come together to celebrate diversity and resilience is a true testament to the strength of this community. We are building a legacy of unity and opportunity, and this is only the beginning.”

A Celebration of Diversity and Unity
With families, civic leaders, educators, and community organizations coming together under one roof, the event once again showcased the power of inclusion and collective strength. The diversity of attendees highlighted the event’s core mission: to build bridges, foster belonging, and empower young people to dream boldly.
Looking Ahead
Now in its fifth year, Unity in the Community has grown into one of the region’s most impactful grassroots events. Its continued success underscores the importance of collaboration and the power of mentorship. As the initiative grows, its vision remains steadfast to uplift communities, invest in youth, and inspire the next generation of leaders.
